How to keep your house and pets safe this Halloween

Halloween is a time for spooky fun, creative costumes, and delicious treats. However, it's also a time when safety should be a top priority. Whether you're handing out candy to trick-or-treaters or hosting a haunted house party, here are some essential tips to ensure your home and pets remain safe this Halloween.

1. Use lighting

Proper lighting can prevent accidents and deter mischievous behaviour.

  • Illuminate pathways: Ensure all walkways, steps, and driveways are well-lit. Use solar lights, lanterns, or even glow sticks to guide trick-or-treaters safely to your door.
  • Check outdoor lights: Replace any burnt-out bulbs and consider adding extra lighting around your front garden and porch.
  • Decorative lights: Use LED candles in pumpkins and other decorations to reduce fire hazards.

2. Clear the path

Obstacles can cause trips and falls, leading to injuries.

  • Remove hazards: Clear away garden hoses, toys, and other items from your yard and walkways.
  • Secure decorations: Ensure that all Halloween decorations are securely fastened and not obstructing paths.
  • Rake leaves: Wet leaves can be slippery, so keep your yard raked and clear.

3. Pet safety

Halloween can be stressful for pets, and they may react unpredictably.

  • Keep pets indoors: To prevent them from getting scared or running away, keep pets inside during peak trick-or-treating hours and your cat flaps locked.
  • Create a safe space: Set up a quiet, comfortable area for your pets away from the front door and the excitement.
  • Avoid toxic treats: Many Halloween treats, especially chocolate, are toxic to pets. Keep all candy out of their reach.
  • Identification: Make sure your pet is microchipped and has your phone number on their collars so you can trace them if they go missing.
  • Desensitise dogs: Play firework sounds at a low volume well in advance of Halloween. This gradually gets them used to the sound.

4. Fire safety

Open flames can be a significant hazard, especially with flowing costumes and decorations.

  • Use flameless candles: Opt for battery-operated candles in your pumpkins and decorations.
  • Keep decorations away from flames: Ensure all decorations are kept away from any open flames.
  • Fire extinguisher: Have a fire extinguisher readily available and know how to use it.

5. Secure your home

Halloween can attract vandals and burglars.

  • Lock doors and windows: Even if you're home, keep all doors and windows locked.
  • Security systems: Use your home alarm, and consider installing security cameras.
  • Neighbourhood watch: Coordinate with neighbours to keep an eye out for any suspicious activity.

Halloween should be a fun and memorable night for everyone. By taking these precautions, you can help ensure that your home remains a safe and welcoming place for trick-or-treaters, party guests, and your beloved pets alike. Happy Halloween, and stay safe!
