Adding additional drivers to your car insurance policy is a pretty common requirement whether it is your spouse, partner or children. Here at Allianz we allow you to add additional drivers to your policy on a permanent or temporary basis, subject to standard acceptance criteria.

You can also add additional named drivers to your policy on a temporary basis*. We provide up to 30 days cover free of charge if a named driver is over 25 years of age, is claims/convictions free and holds a full clean driving licence.

The 30 days free cover is reduced to 7 days if the driver only has a provisional licence/ learner permit. After 7 days we charge €38 per week up to a maximum of one month.

Temporary Additional Drivers aged under 25 cannot be added in your first year of insurance.

Temporary Drivers are subject to the same requirements as the Main Driver(s) with regard to licence, accident record and convictions. Please note an additional excess applied to those drivers under 25 or who have a provisional licence. See your policy booklet or click here  for more information.

If you would like to add an additional driver to your policy click here to login to MyAllianz.

Permanent additional named drivers can be added to your policy provided they meet the same requirements as the main driver(s) with regard to licence, accident record and convictions.

Additional named drivers can usually be added to a policy when the policy is first taken out or at any stage during the policy*.

Open Driving is an optional extra (available at an additional cost*) that allows other qualified drivers to use your car as long as they’re between the ages of 30 and 70 and they meet the same requirements as the main driver(s) with regard to licence, accident record and convictions. This option is only available if you are aged 25 or older.

Open Driving might not be available for your type of car and it is not available where we have provided a premium reduction for insuring a second car with us. Open Driving covers anyone within the specified age range to drive the insured car provided they:

  • Have a clean licence
  • Are free from claims
  • Have not had any convictions or disqualifications arising from a motoring offence within the past 5 years, other than spent convictions. (*Any convictions spent under the Criminal Justice (Spent Convictions and Certain Disclosures) Act 2016 do not need to be disclosed. Further information on spent convictions is available on WWW.CITIZENSINFORMATION.IE or you can check with your local Garda station if your conviction is considered spent under the Criminal Justice Act 2016).
  • Do not suffer from any medical conditions which may inhibit their ability to drive, unless a General Practitioner has declared such driver(s) fit to drive

*Please note that if you add an additional driver or the Open Driving optional extra to your policy before your renewal a mid-term adjustment fee may need to be applied and that an additional Premium applies for this cover.

Calls may be recorded.

*Minimum premium of €284 applies.
